I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Nursing Science of the School of Basic Medical Sciences in the College of Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. The Department is one of the outstanding Nursing Departments in Nigerian Universities in terms of infra-structure, human resources and professional/academic performance. The curriculum is formulated to produce professional nurses who are knowledgeable and clinically competent to function in major areas of nursing practice, dedicated to service and equipped with entrepreneurial skills. In line with the globalization of modern nursing and the trend towards development of nursing graduates who will provide quality care in health care delivery, the program is well designed and continuously adapted in response to national and global needs of nursing manpower development.

The Department has robust, dedicated and competent members of staff who are highly committed, well-motivated, excellence driven, interested in the welfare of its students and poised to produce polyvalent graduate nurses sensitive to innovations in health technology and modern evidence based nursing care and practice. Our graduates are educationally and professionally sound Nurses whose assertion on nursing care is unequivocal in every aspect of client care and responsive to the needs of the society while meeting globally accepted standards.

Our Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) curriculum which is continuously updated to keep abreast with modern demands continues to evolve towards improved collaboration and innovation in nursing education, scholarship, practice and service. The curriculum includes Medical and Surgical Nursing, Community/Public Health Nursing, Maternal and Child Health, Mental Health/ Psychiatric Nursing, Health Education and Research to produce highly skilled and competent nurses. Various opportunities are available to nursing students’ learning including education partnership, University Teaching hospital, Specialist/General hospital and Community externship work-study programs and volunteer community service activities. The curriculum ensures that adequate coverage of Nursing and Midwifery curriculum are met before the students are exposed to the pre-professional and Nursing and Midwifery Council Examination.
